BlackBerry Torch 9800 review

August 25th, 2010 admin No comments

This slider phone uses an improved touchscreen, but is a faint reminder of the Palm Pre and, in many ways, the BlackBerry Storm 2 which shares the same bulky heft and 3.2-inch screen size.

Unfortunately, the Torch is not particularly suited to the BlackBerry diehards, because the QWERTY keyboard is a bit too small and the processor is too slow to keep up with the finger-clicking productivity apps that BlackBerry users depend on.

Despite being easier to use than the last version, the new BlackBerry 6 OS interface RIM merely borrows some ideas from HTC Sense instead of really overhauling the smartphone platform for a next-generation of business users.

HTC Desire HD (Ace) gets caught on video

August 13th, 2010 admin No comments

One of the most anticipated HTC Android devices has got to be the Desire HD, otherwise known by its HTC Ace codename. We’ve seen a couple of pictures floating around the intertoobs, but never have we had a chance to see some real footage of the handset, until today.

The Desire HD has everything you’d expect from a beautifully made HTC Android handset. With that said, the device looks painfully similar to the EVO 4G, not an exact copy, but close enough to ring similar in our minds. The rumored spec sheet on this Android smartphone is absolutely mouth-watering, and while we don’t exactly know for sure what carrier it will off the Desire HD, we do have a couple of guesses. The video below shows what looks like to be a pretty-finalized Desire HD, though the HTC handset isn’t powered up.

The HTC Desire HD should come with the following specification, though may differ at the time of launch.

•4.3-inch WVGA Touch Screen
•8-Megapixel Camera
•1GHZ Qualcomm Processor
•Android 2.2 Froyo
•HD 720p Video Capture
•Xvid Video Playback
•SRS Surround Sound
•Adobe Flash 10 Support
•4GB Internal Memory (up to 32GB)
•Uni-Body Aluminium Design
Nothing too far-fetched, yet nothing to snub your nose at either. Expect this to be one of many great Android devices HTC intends to unleash, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this isn’t the highest-end phone that they release by the end of this year. The rumored Scorpion could come packing a 1.5GHz processor, but we’ll believe it when we see it.

The one issue I see from this video that bothers me is the fact that the 3.5mm headphone jack in on the bottom of the handset. I just don’t like it, and I have no problem being picky, as there will be many high-end Android phones with headphones jacks on the top. Just a preference, not necessarily a deal-breaker.

HTC Ace – let the rumours commence

August 4th, 2010 admin No comments

The HTC Ace will be a new Android 3.0 powered smartphone, running a dual-core snapdragon CPU. It will be a large touchscreen device, 4.3″ AMOLED like the HTC HD2 or EVO but styled more like the HTC Incredible. An 8 megapixel camera with flash. GPS and all the other nice bits that we’ve come to expect from an HTC Handset.

Obviously we’ll try to find out more and will have our ear very close to the ground and we’ll post more as we get it!

New BlackBerry Curve 3G details leaked

August 4th, 2010 admin No comments

Details on RIM’s new BlackBerry Gemini 9300 have been leaked onto the internet, with a planned release sometime in 2010.

The leaked pics and details come courtesy of Boy Genius Report, which describes the BlackBerry Gemini 9300 as an evolved 8900, with a slightly larger screen, more rounded keyboard and silver casing.

So BlackBerry fans can look forward to high-speed HSDPA connectivity, an improved CPU, Wi-Fi, GPS and a decent camera of 3.2 megapixels or more.

Introducing BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300

August 4th, 2010 admin No comments

We had heard last week that the ho-hum BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 would be wriggling its way to Bell, and now internal documents are showing an August 12 launch date.

From what we’ve gathered, the BlackBerry 9300 (code-named Kepler) will be a microscopic upgrade to the 8500 series, offering the same screen, same camera, same app memory, same operating system, and just as much 3G as the CDMA 8530, only now for GSM carriers. Why on Earth Bell (and presumably Telus) would carry a CDMA and a GSM version of what is essentially an identical phone is still a huge mystery.

Vodafone, T-Mobile and Verizon will probably be picking it up too, if for some reason you’re attracted to it. There’s no mention of pricing on Bell, but you can expect it to be pretty cheap.

HTC Vision with Android, full QWERTY in the wild?

July 28th, 2010 admin No comments

For reasons seemingly known only to Peter Chou himself, HTC has mostly steered clear of producing high-quality physical QWERTY devices running Android, despite the fact that there might be no phone manufacturer in the world more skilled at making them (let us remind you of the Touch Pro2, among many others dating back the better part of a decade). Anyhow, we caught wind last month of a possible entry in the form of the so-called “Vision,” but we didn’t have any visuals — just a user agent profile that may or may not amount to anything. Well, that seems to be changing today with a couple blurry shots out of a Croatian site that allegedly shows the goods featuring a 3.7-inch display, a 1GHz processor (Snapdragon, we assume), and Android 2.1 with Sense (the launcher looks like stock Android in this photo, but the status bar is clearly HTC custom). At a glance, it doesn’t seem to be the prettiest thing in the world — but for a form factor traditionally associated with power users and suits, this might be just the ticket.

HTC Vision Could Be T-Mobile’s Project Emerald

July 28th, 2010 admin No comments

Details still haven’t been confirmed yet, but word is that the upcoming HTC Vision will sport some pretty juicy specifications. If the rumors are true, it’ll boast a dual-core 800MHz processor, Android 3.0, and a huge 4.3-inch display. There are suggestions that the HTC Vision might be the Project Emerald that is going on at T-Mobile, though of course, there isn’t any way to confirm this just yet. If everything falls into the place, the Vision could be ready for T-Mobile to sell by the holidays, which is encouraging news.
